The paper considers, firstly, the situation of persons with higher education on labour market, and especially problems relating to employing graduates; secondly – the realisation by the Polish higher education system its social function to educate according to needs of the national economy.
Two thesis are formulated and documented in the paper. The first one draws attention to the domination of strongly simplified perspective of mutual relations between tertiary education and the economy (labour market) in Polish public discourse. The second one says about the groundlessness of the generalised conviction that Polish higher education institutions are responsible for meeting the labour market needs in the improper way.
In contemporary society relations between educational system and its environment are shaped intentionally by a strategy of socio-economic development and the premises of the state educational policy resulting from it. However, as the tertiary education system has several social functions – not only function to prepare to professional life, the demand for higher education is created not only by labor market but also by a system of socially recognized values shaped by educational ideology dominating in a given period.
The analysis of statistical data concerning the tertiary education in the context of the labour market needs leads to the conclusion, that completing studies is less and less favourable to attain by the graduates desired position on labor market. In this situation higher education institutions should be delivered from the overwhelming stereotype of ‘educating for labor market needs’ and should be stimulated to apply more universal criteria of education quality – independent of technological dynamics of the economic system.
