Influence of affective valence and type of words on memorization of new linguistic material with consideration of emotionality as a disposition

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the process of memorizing new linguistic material depends on affective valence, type of words and the retrieval moment, and whether this relationship is moderated by emotionality, understood as the tendency of the participants to experience positive or negative affect. The analysis of the results showed that the affective valence of pseudo-words and the retrieval moment have a persistent and the greatest impact on the efficiency of conscious memorization of new linguistic material. Both in the recall and recognition processes, the retrieval moment significantly affects the level of memorization depending on the affective valence, regardless of whether the words have concrete or abstract meaning. Affective pseudo-words are better remembered than neutral ones, and over time, positive words are better remembered then negative ones. Emotionality as disposition does not have an isolated impact on the effectiveness of memorization, but moderates the influence of the type of pseudo-words on the level of memorization, although this effect is not persistent. Therefore, it appears that memory does not depend on individual emotional tendencies.
