Abstract

The article examines social constructing of mothering and family on the example of helplessness within childcare and parental affairs understood as the problem of public scope. A ‘bad mother’ is one who has failed on one or more of the criteria or expectations of ‘good motherhood’. For many (including the helpless within childcare), there are barriers and restrictions to the ideal of good mothering. Examining how the mother and mothering was constructed as a ‘bad’ mother helps to understand how hegemonic notions of ‘good’ mothering are reinforced and perpetuated.
