Abstract

The review indicates that Dariusz Kiszczak’s publication is the first attempt to organize and comprehensively discuss the legacy of Leo Belmont, whose body of work places itself at the crossroads of Young Poland and the interwar period, the high and the popular culture, the highly-developed journalism and the newly-established cinema, literary and legal interests of the author in W wieku nerwowym (“In Nervous Age”). The presumption of embracing the entire work – difficult to achieve, and ultimately probably impossible – led researchers to focus on the most characteristic currents and themes of the work, and above all, on its journalistic aspect. The reviewer points out that Dariusz Kiszczak saught the key to Belmont’s writing in the author’s outlook, formed on the basis of biographical experience (the writer’s Jewish roots). In conclusion, she presumes that the author of the publication did not aim at an enlightening interpretation, which would give Belmont a prominent place in the Young Poland and the inter-war canon, and grew into one of the prominent writers, but rather at a relatively comprehensive approximation of the ouvre, which has not been given the scholarly focus it deserves.
