Abstract

The text focuses on the phenomenon of hospitality shown to immigrants by the inhabitants of the Greek island of Lesbos in 2015–2016. The background of the analyzed phenomenon is the "migration crisis", which was particularly intense in the Aegean region. The article attempts to analyze the motivations for taking actions for the benefit of emigrants based on interviews and observations collected during the field research. Three dominant explications have been identified, pointing to sources of hospitality. Subsequently, they referred to the left-wing traditions still alive on the island, the immigration experiences of many inhabitants of the island, including the fact that the exchange of people between Greece and Turkey was rooted in the history of the island, as well as the ideology and activities of anarchist circles on the island. The text also indicates the presence of social forces who oppose immigrants and the conflict related to the mass appearance of immigrants.
