Abstract

In this study, the author discusses the Holodomor – the crime of genocide committed against the Ukrainian nation, although not limited only to the Great Famine of 1932–1933. It is subjected to politicalological analysis in the context of the broader genocidal policy of the Soviet authorities towards Ukrainians in the USSR. The author emphasizes the main components of the concept of the crime of genocide constructed by Raphaeł Lemkin (who argued that it was, in fact, a colonial crime) and compares it with the current definition of genocide rooted in the UN Convention of 1948. Finally, the author deals with the discourse related to the presence of genocide (including the Holodomor) and its perception in the Ukrainian politics of memory of the last few decades.

    Gennadi Pobereƶny – doktor nauk politycznych na Wolnym Uniwersytecie Ukraińskim w Monachium oraz badacz afiliowany przy Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Zajmuje się tematyką ludobójstwa oraz studiami postkolonialnymi w kontekście funkcjonowania Związku Sowieckiego. Jest współtwórcą Centrum Studiów nad Ludobójstwem im. Rafała Lemkina w Chersoniu (Ukraina), a także autorem wielu prac naukowych poświęconych sowieckiemu ludobójstwu. Stypendysta programu Fulbrighta w Kijowie (lata 2019–2020), a także programów organizowanych przez Open Society Foundations oraz Towarzystwo Naukowe im. Tarasa Szewczenki w USA.
