English: Key to International Studies and Barrier to Deepened Understanding?

Abstract

Following a discussion of the positive and negative aspects of the use of English in exchange programs, seven hypotheses on the use of the vernacular in academia are analyzed and conclusions drawn, leading to seeing English as one, but not as the only necessary key for international understanding in the academic world.

Author Biography

Wilfried Hartmann, University of Hamburg; European University Foundation Luxembourg

Professor, Doctor Honoris Causa, (born in 1941) taught Comparative Education and Mother Tongue Education at the University of Hamburg, Germany, where he served for 4 years as the Dean of the Faculty and for 7 years as the Vice-President of the University. For 8 years he acted as Vice-Chair of the Governing Board and the Executive Committee of the UNESCO-Institute of Education and for 11 years as a member of the Administrative Board/Director of the European University Foundation, Luxembourg.
