Abstract

Artykuł niniejszy ukazał się w 1985 roku w Anglii jako szósta z kolei pozycja w serii małych monografii, wydawanych przez Międzynarodowe Stowarzyszenie Biologów Człowieka i poświęconych dziejom antropologii fizycznej w różnych krajach (International Association of Humań Biologists, Occasional Papers, ed. D. F. Roberts, Newcastle upon Tyne, England).

Ponieważ opracowanie to dotarło do Polski tylko w kilkunastu egzemplarzach rozesłanych polskim członkom stowarzyszenia, redakcja "Przeglądu" zdecydowała się na opublikowanie jego wersji polskiej, w mniemaniu, że może ona być przydatna, np. dla celów dydaktycznych. Artykuł napisany został pierwotnie w języku angielskim (przez jednego z trójki autorów, na podstawie szczegółowego konspektu opracowanego wspólnie przez wszystkich trzech). Tekst tu publikowany jest wiernym przekładem z oryginału angielskiego. Należy pamiętać, że pisany on był z myślą o czytelniku niepolskim; stąd np. w doborze piśmiennictwa autorzy dawali, gdzie to było możliwe, priorytet publikacjom w językach angielskim, niemieckim lub francuskim. Przekładu oryginału na język polski dokonała Zofia Prele, co odnotowujmy z podziękowaniem.
