The Fear of Punishment as a Factor Motivating the Behaviour of the Protagonists of chansons de geste Doon de Mayence Cycle

Abstract

The article shows, how the fear of punishment influences the activities of protagonists of four French medieval epic poems (chansons de geste): Renaut de Montauban, Girart de Roussillon, Raoul de Crambrai and Chevalerie Ogier. Firstly, the basic notions, such as fear, anxiety and punishment are defined. Then, the presentation of penalties following infringement of divine law follows. Also, the public law penalties such as confiscation of fief or disgraceful penalties for knighthood such as hanging, or mutilation are shown. Secondly, the article proves that the perspective of punishment often appears in the analysed epic poems. The protagonists are frequently reminded of the perspective of penalty by external factors, usually by remonstrating vassals. The reference of penalty usually causes no protagonists’ fear, despite expectations. Thus, the rebellious vassals consider the perspective of being punished by their activities.

    Alicja Bańczyk, doktor nauk humanistycznych w dziedzinie literaturoznawstwa, od 2019 roku pracuje jako asystent w Instytucie Filologii Romańskiej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Ukończyła również studia magisterskie w dziedzinie prawa. W 2019 roku obroniła doktorat zatytułowany: L’exercice du pouvoir au Moyen Âge d’après quelques chansons de geste (le cycle des barons révoltés) et leurs remaniements postérieurs (pl. Sprawowanie władzy w średniowieczu na podstawie kilku chansons de geste (cykl baronów zbuntowanych) i ich późniejszych reminiscencji). W swoich badaniach skupia się na relacjach łączących prawo i literaturę (law and literature studies), głównie na literackim obrazie prawa i wpływie jaki prawo obowiązujące w czasie powstania dzieła wywiera na tekst. Interesuje ją także dydaktyka języka prawniczego.
