From a diatopic and diastratic point of view, Pataouète is the basilect (furthest variety from the prestigious form) of the Pied-Noir French of Algeria which appeared and was spoken, among other places, throughout the working-class districts of the capital Algiers such as Bâb-el-Oued and Belcourt during the period of colonisation in the second half of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is distinguished from two other regional varieties which are chapourlao (or chapourrao) in western Algeria in Orania (known mainly in the city of Oran), and tchapagate in the east (Constantine and Bône). The linguistic analysis of a certain number of terms and expressions of this variety allows one to note that the speech typical of Pataouète uses a large number of special, distinctive terms, foreign francised or not, as is often used in French pied-noir from Algeria.
