Abstract

The article aims to discuss the censorship strategies applied to works by Włodzimierz Scisłowski submitted for publication in the satirical magazine Kaktus [Cactus] in 1957–1960. The source material is a collection of cryptotexts, i.e. confidential documents evaluating articles from the weekly, created at Wojewódzki Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk w Poznaniu [WUKPPiW, Voivodship Office for the Control of the Press, Publications and Public Performances in Poznan]. Censors interfered with Scislowski’s satirical works – epigrams, poems, ballads, accusing the author of negative and exaggerated depictions of the political and social reality of the country. Some of the works were released after introducing changes imposed by the censorship office; some were not allowed for publication.

Anna Wiśniewska-Grabarczyk – Ph.D., researcher of censorship of Polish People’s Republic, writer and literary critic, author of several dozen books and academic articles, popular science articles, articles in the field of literary criticism, and opinion articles. For her novel Porzeczkowy Józef [Current Josef] she was nominated for the Witold Gombrowicz Literary Prize; she is the author of the script for the radio drama Spożywczy bigiel. Mrożące sok w listkach przygody Szpinaka Alberta; laureate of the Polityka weekly award, and of the University of Lodz Foundation Award for the best master’s thesis, and recipient of a distinction in the Władysław Pobóg-Malinowski Competition for the Best History Début of the Year. Principal investigator of NCN grant Powojenna literatura polska w świetle kryptotekstów (na podstawie biuletynów Głównego Urzędu Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk z lat 1945–1956) [Post-war Polish literature in the light of cryptotexts (on the basis of bulletins of the Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows 1945–1956)] and IDUB/UŁ grant Humor jako strategia przetrwania. Pismo satyryczne „Kaktus” w ingerencjach cenzorskich z lat 1957–1960 [Humour as a survival strategy. The Kaktus satirical periodical in censorship interventions in the years 1957–1960]; contractor in a grant run at the Faculty of Teacher Education, Zagreb University (Aktivno pamćenje i zaboravljanje u povijesti dječje književnosti [Active memory and forgetting in the history of children’s literature]). Recipient of a scholarship of the Maurycy Mochnacki Foundation; member of the Editorial Committee of the Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Litteraria Polonica journal, the Genetic and Documentary Research in Literature, Polish Academy of Sciences, Łódź division and a former member of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (PIASA).
