Abstract

The 1982 publication of François Bon’s Sortie d’usine and Leslie Kaplan’s L’Excès-l’usine marked a significant turning point in contemporary French literature, introducing a return to narrative based on critical writing in the form of socio-fiction. These works enable writers to focus their attention on the fractures in the modern world, without inciting the reader to take part in a protest struggle. This analysis explores how these narratives participate in the rereading of reality and the transmission of a literary and memorial legacy, inscribing working-class memory in a constant tension between history and collective memory. With this approach, Bon and Kaplan establish a singular connection to a working-class past that continues to influence contemporary writers, such as Sylvain Rossignol with Notre usine est un roman (2008) and Frédéric H. Fajardie with Métaleurop. Paroles ouvrières (2003).
