Abstract

This article examines the figure of Michèle Akli, the protagonist of Satisfaction by Nina Bouraoui, as a contemporary resurgence of Bovaryism, situated at the crossroads of the Flaubertian legacy and its new fictional reconfigurations. From a comparative perspective on Madame Bovary, the study explores how Michèle embodies a radicalized form of female rebellion, marked by violence, disenchantment, and profound disillusionment. It investigates the ways in which Bouraoui inscribes her character within a dynamic of literary memory and aesthetic rupture, thereby revealing the enduring tensions between the desire for emancipation, social norms, and the quest for identity. More than a mere inheritance, Michèle’s figure enacts a hauntology of the feminine archetype, in which forms inherited from the past re-emerge, mutatis mutandis, through renewed configurations. It will therefore be shown that Bovaryism does not constitute a fixed model, but is continually reconfigured in contact with new historical, cultural, and subjective contexts. Finally, it highlights the capacity of the contemporary novel to reinterpret literary legacies and, in doing so, to engage more deeply with current issues of alterity, social marginalization, and female subjectivity.
