Abstract

The aim of this article is to argue that in Dietario voluble (2008) by Enrique Vila-Matas, autopoiesis enables the dissolution of the boundary between fiction and reality, thereby contributing to the construction of a specific model of the enunciating subject’s identity. The first part of the article presents the concept of autopoiesis, derived from the biological thought of Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. Next, the concept is applied to literary theory, identifying its three defining features: the metafictional component together with intratextuality, intertextuality, and the references made by the enunciating subject to the extratextual world. The second part addresses the complexities of the diary genre, emphasizing the creative freedom it affords. This examination makes it possible to identify the characteristics of an autopoietic process in Enrique Vila-Matas’s diary, ultimately showing that the creation of a self-sustaining literary universe both fosters and shapes the formation of the enunciating subject’s identity while also highlighting the dynamics of self-creation inherent in diary discourse.
