Lorentowicz about Reymont: between memoir and pasquil

The article is an attempt to present the image of Władysław Stanisław Reymont as depicted in the publications of the literary critic Jan Lorentowicz. The transformations in Lorentowicz’s statements are traced–ranging from objective, albeit harsh, articles dedicated to the work of the author of Chłopi (The Peasants), to memoirs of a distinctly critical nature published in 1934 in “Kurier Poranny” and later reprinted in Spojrzenie wstecz (1935). This paper is dedicated to analyzing the harmful narrative embedded in these works, which is full of irony and exaggerations – particularly focusing on the distorted portrayal of Reymont based on exaggerated anecdotes from the period of close acquaintance between the two writers (1896–1899), when they shared an apartment at 6 and 12 rue Rollin in Paris.
