Abstract

The article analyses the impact of the European Stuttering Specialization (ESS) on the development of speech therapists’ competencies in stuttering therapy. The aim of the study was to determine how specialised courses, such as ESS, enhance the preparation of speech therapists for working with individuals experiencing stuttering, both in terms of theoretical knowledge and practical therapeutic skills. The study employed a qualitative method – a partially categorized interview – conducted with six Polish participants of the ESS course, who had diverse professional experience. The interviews focused on the respondents’ experiences related to education and their perception of the effectiveness of the acquired competences in professional practice. Outcomes of opinion analysis indicate that participation in the ESS course significantly improves the diagnostic and therapeutic skills of speech therapists, especially in the area of individualization of therapy and working with individuals and families with different needs.
