Literary Mercurians of Łódź in the Works of Reymont, Singer, and Others

The article reconstructs, based on literary works by W.S. Reymont, I. Singer, W. Kosiakiewicz, and literary reportage by Z. Bartkiewicz, a local depiction of the Łódź bourgeoisie during the belle époque. The interpretive framework is the Mercurian model of modernity development by Yuri Slezkine, inspired by the domain of Hermes, the divine intermediary and the only ancient Greco-Roman god whose image was linked in 19th-century European culture to commerce and industry. The Łódź bourgeoisie thus appears as a social class performing Mercurian roles – as intermediaries, merchants, entrepreneurs, industrialists, and financiers. These creators of modern Łódź are portrayed as emigrants and exiles from their own cultural traditions, with their literary personifications strongly marking the works mentioned.
