Building coverage of street blocks in the old town of Kalisz from 1825 to 2023

The main objective of the study was to identify changes in the infilling of street blocks in the Old Town of Kalisz between 1825 and 2023 and to determine the reasons for these changes. The analysis was performed on the basis of collected cartographic materials in the form of three archival city plans covering the years 1825–1922, maps of war damage in 1914, a topographic map for 1981 and topographic data available in the BDOT10k database for 2023. The study used the city plan analysis method proposed by M.R.G. Conzen which allows changes in the infilling to be determined. The main factor that affected the sequence of phases within the Old Town of Kalisz, in terms of Conzen’s ‘burgage cycle’, was the destruction that occurred during World War I, when the city was shelled and burned by German troops. The planned reconstruction after the end of hostilities contributed to the rapid restoration of the destroyed urban fabric. Currently, there is a gradual decline in urban development in the old town area of Kalisz.
