Shortly after the Congo had gained its independence, on the area of the newly formed Republic the richest provinces declared secession. The important role in the armed forces of Katanga was played by the army aviation cooperation created by the army with considerable help from the Belgians. The moment that the international forces joined the struggle between the secessionists’ and government’s troops significantly increased the activity of Katanga’s aviation. Although Katanga aviation possessed very slim resources, they managed to prevent the air forces of the United Nations Force from taking any actions. Despite heavy losses the aviation of Katanga was not completely destroyed and regenerated soon. The final stage of military aviation operations in the newly formed state were fights against the Simbas which were fought from 1964 to 1965.
