Author Guidelines

The editors of the journal feel obliged to maintain high publishing and ethical standards, therefore they adopt a number of solutions, in particular:

• introduces protection against „ghostwriting” and / or „guest authorship” cases;
• obliges the authors of the publication to disclose the contribution of individual people to the creation of the publication (with their affiliation, percentage share, authorship of the work’s assumptions, methods, technical elements);
• obliges the authors of publications to disclose sources of financing for publications, information on the contribution of research and development institutions and other entities;
• conducts activities ensuring respect for copyrights (anti-pagiarism system);
• it does not charge for the submission of the thesis or for the peer-review procedure.

The editorial office asks the authors to take into account the following requirements:

• the structure of an article, in particular a work defined as an „original scientific article”, should refer to the generally recognized classical structure and include the following parts: Introduction (Introduction), Material and methods, Results, Discussion and – optionally – Conclusions; in international nomenclature: IMRAD (Introduction, Material (s), Methods, Results and Discussion); the names of individual parts can be adapted to a specific topic;
• the volume of articles: from ½ to 1 sheet (1 publishing sheet corresponds to 40,000 characters with spaces or 3000 cm² of the illustration area); in justified cases, the volume may exceed 1 sheet;
• volume of reports, scientific announcements and reviews - up to ½ sheet;
• texts should be sent in an electronic version (recommended format: Word for Windows) and in the form of a printout (2 copies) on paper in B5 or A4 format;
• recommended font: Times New Roman 11, abstracts, footnotes and captions under the picture: Times New Roman 10;
• if Polish is the original language of the work, the following should also be attached: the title of the work, descriptions of figures, photographs and tables, an abstract (up to 150 words) and keywords in English;
• if English is the original language of the work, also include: the title of the work, descriptions of figures, photographs and tables, an abstract (up to 150 words) and keywords in Polish;
• illustrations in files: *.CDR (save to version 17), *.TIF, *.JPG; if the author includes graphic files in the text, he should also provide them in one of the above-mentioned formats and with a resolution of not less than 300 dpi;
• illustrations (drawings, photographs) and tables should be provided with a title and a sequence number, the signature should clearly inform about the authorship and origin of the data used for their development;
• literature should be referred to in the text by providing the name of the author and the year of publication, e.g. (Nowak 2013), (Nowak et al., 2013) or according to Nowak (2013);
• all references cited must be in the bibliography which is formatted according to the following examples:

• it is recommended to include publication identifiers (DOI) at the end of the bibliographic description; format of the references to sources using DOI: prefix / ending, e.g. doi: 10.1000 / 102;
• checking if a given bibliography item has a DOI is possible using the form available at: http://www.crossref.org/guestquery/. Including a DOI in your bibliography will improve the traceability of your article online and increase your citation;
• the editorial board recommends that the order of authors should be determined on the basis of the degree of responsibility and work contribution;
• ready materials for printing should be sent to the following address: Redakcja Acta Universitatis Lodziensis, Folia Geographica Physica, 90-139 Łódź, ul. Narutowicza 88, p. 137; e-mail: geo.physica@uni.lodz.pl, sent directly to the Editorial Office or placed on the OJS platform;
• authors of published papers accept the fact that their electronic version is available online on the server of the University of Lodz with assigned identifiers (DOI / URI) in the collections of the Repository of the University of Lodz, and on pages containing their bibliography they can post links to these addresses;
• before publication, the authors sign a contract with the Publishing House of the University of Lodz.

Digital accessibility - alternative texts

Please include alternative descriptions with all journal's illustrations.

An alternative text is textual information about what you see in a graphic element that is relevant to the text or topic that the element illustrates. Alternative texts are read by a screen reader and allow people with blindness or vision impairment to see what is, for example, in a given graphic, photo, table or chart. Graphic elements without an alternative description will be read by the assistive software for visually impaired people as the word ‘graphic’, so they will not get any other information that this ‘graphic’ is supposed to convey.  

What should an alternative text look like?  

• Above all, the description should be concise and succinct – try to describe the graphic as accurately as possible, doing so in the shortest possible way (the optimum length of an alternative text should not exceed 250 characters)
• It should describe the meaning and content of the graphic element in question 
• It should contain key information for the viewer (e.g. a repetition of the content written on the graphic, or in the case of photos, a description of the most important elements building the message: “Rector presenting the habilitation diploma to Dr Anna Kowalska”) 
• When creating alternative texts for charts and infographics, remember to include, in addition to the title, a summary and description of the trends resulting from the graphic. Often, due to the length and level of complexity of the data being described, it is worth including the chart description in the proper body of the text, below the graphic itself 
• You do not need to use alternative descriptions for graphics that are purely decorative (in which case mark them as decorative by selecting the “Mark as decorative” option).

Function of adding alternative description in Microsoft Word  

To add alternative text for graphics/charts added into a Microsoft Word document, right-click on the object and select “Format image” -> “Accessibility” -> “Alternative text”; or “Review” -> “Check accessibility “-> “Alternative text” 

For graphic elements that only have a decorative function in the document, also fill in the alternative text field – instead of the content in the “Alternative text” field, tick the “Mark as decorative” option.
