The aim of the study was to test and compare two methods: visual (manual) and computer GIS (automated) for the separation of flat areas within the monotonous plain of the Kouris alluvial fan in the southern part of Cyprus. Both methods are based on the analysis of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). At the available resolution (90 and 25 m), the areas determined manually are more precise than those determined automatically. The average compliance of the results for most of the divisions (⅔) made with both methods is in the range of 35–47%. Both methods showed internal differentiation of the morphology of the Kouris alluvial fan. The shape of the alluvial fan means that the widest zones with the greatest number of flat areas are those closest to the sea. However, there are more flat areas on the west of the river and they are larger than in the eastern part. This may be the result of the evolution of this form and the variability of accumulation on different sides of the fan, as well as the overlap of this main Kouris form with smaller stream fans dissecting the carbonate plateau.
